Your hair health journey

Kiri10™ Wellness Desk · about three minutes

Build a picture of your hair health through your weight loss journey

Losing weight changes your hair, and almost nobody warns you. The shed usually arrives two to four months after the weight starts coming off, right when you are feeling your best. This short journey maps where you are, what is pulling on your hair's protein, and what to do about it before, during and after.

The one fact to hold onto. Hair is roughly 85 to 95% keratin, a protein. When the body is short of protein it feeds muscle, organs and blood first. Hair is a long way down the list, which is why it is often the first thing to show that something has changed.

Nothing here is medical advice. If hair loss is sudden, patchy or severe, please see your GP.

Step 1 of 5 · Your timeline

Where are you on the journey?

Why months 2 to 4? Rapid change pushes more hairs than usual into their resting phase at once. They stay put for about three months, then let go together. The science name is telogen effluvium. It is common, it is temporary for most people, and the hair that replaces it is built from the protein you are eating now.
Step 2 of 5 · Your target

Your weight loss target

Pace matters more than the total. A steady 0.5 to 0.75 kg a week gives your body time to keep up. Faster than about 1 kg a week, especially early on, is when more hairs tend to hit the resting phase together. If you are on medication or have had surgery, the pace is often not up to you, which is exactly why the protein side needs planning.
Step 3 of 5 · Diet and medication

How are you doing it?

Your target will appear here once we know your goal weight.

Protein shakes for muscle, keratin for hair. Trainers protect muscle with a daily protein target because muscle is protein. Hair is protein too. Appetite drops on GLP-1s and after surgery, so protein often drops with it, and hair is the first to notice. Most guidance for people losing weight lands at 1.2 to 1.6 grams of protein per kilogram of goal body weight per day.
Step 4 of 5 · Other stressors

What else is pulling on your hair?

Tap everything that is true for you. The sheep is here because our keratin comes from New Zealand wool, and because it is a fluffy cloud of all the things life throws at hair.

What is pulling on your hair

Your plan: before, during and after

Where keratin fits. A high protein diet gives the body the building blocks. A keratin supplement adds the specific protein hair is made of, and the research on hair growth supplements is consistent on one point: it takes 90 to 180 days of daily use to see the difference, because that is how long a hair takes to grow out. Start before the shed if you can. If you are already in it, start now and give it the full window.
